Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of opposing Operation Sindoor and the Waqf Amendment Act to consolidate the Muslim vote bank. Speaking at an organisational meeting in Kolkata, Shah said that Banerjee’s stand on these issues was politically motivated and would be answered by the people in the 2026 state elections.
Shah claimed that Mamata Banerjee opposed Operation Sindoor, which was the Centre’s response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. “To appease the Muslim vote bank, Mamata didi opposed Operation Sindoor. By doing so, she is insulting the mothers and sisters of this country. In 2026, the mothers and sisters of the state would teach the CM and the Trinamool Congress a lesson,” Shah stated.
He also alleged that the recent violence in Murshidabad was “state-sponsored” and involved senior Trinamool Congress leaders. Shah said that despite repeated requests from the Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy the Border Security Force (BSF), the state government did not permit the deployment. According to Shah, this inaction allowed the violence to continue.
On the issue of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, Shah accused the TMC government of failing to act. He said, “Mamata Banerjee has opened the borders of Bengal for the Bangladeshis. She can never stop infiltration, only the BJP can do it.” He further stated that the state government has not provided the necessary land to the BSF to strengthen border security.
Amit Shah also criticised Mamata Banerjee for opposing the Waqf Amendment Act. He said, “Mamata Banerjee is against the law for appeasement politics.” The communal violence in Murshidabad, which reportedly erupted during protests over the Waqf law, resulted in the deaths of at least three people and injuries to several others.
